Satish Gujral, a painter, sculptor, muralist, architect, and writer, has been regarded as a living legend; one of the few who has persistently dominated the art scene in India throughout the entire post-independence period.
He has received equal, if not more, praise as an architect. The Belgian Embassy in New Delhi was chosen by the International Forum of Architects as one of the thousand finest buildings erected in the twentieth century worldwide.
New Delhi residents honoured Gujral as one of the 25 people who had helped put the city on the map over the previous 50 years. The Republic of India bestowed upon him the second highest national honour, the "Padma Vibhushan." Dozens of films have been produced to chronicle his efforts. A full-length documentary on his life is in the works. His writing has been published in four volumes, including an autobiography. His work in this collection is inspired by traditional Indian miniatures and temple sculptures.
Satish Gujral was born in pre-partition Punjab, British India, in 1925. He grew up alongside his older brother, Inder Kumar Gujral, who went on to become India's Prime Minister. At the age of ten, he had an infection that permanently damaged his hearing. When he was 14, he acquired an interest in painting and began depicting his own ideas. He spent the most of his life in Lahore, and so saw the terrible partition at an early age. In a subsequent interview, he said that he observed murders virtually everyday. The split made such an impression on him that it became the foundation of his work in the early stages of his career.

As an Architect:
Despite the fact that he had not studied architecture, he stepped into it in 1968, despite the fact that many thought he was a fool for doing so. But he quickly proved his doubters wrong when Belgian officials contacted him and asked him to design a structure that would serve as their embassy in India. In 1984, he finished his project, which surprised his detractors since the skyscraper was breathtaking. So much so that it was eventually named one of the best structures of the twentieth century in a conference of international architects. He subsequently went on to construct spectacular structures like as Saudi Arabia's summer palace in Riyadh, the CMC research centre in Hyderabad, and Goa University. The Saudi prince commissioned the construction of the summer home after being pleased by the Belgian embassy. Satish's architectural career started off on a high note, but he soon became tired with it and returned to painting.
