Jatin Das is a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, muralist, and poet from India. He is regarded as one of India's most innovative artists. Jatin Das, the father of actress Nandita Das, has worked diligently in the field of Indian art for the past 50 years. He is one of India's most renowned artists, having received the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award. His unrivalled enthusiasm for art, as well as his non-materialistic outlook, have distinguished him from other contemporary artists. He is one of the artists that frequently mocks the so-called commerce that has come into the art world and is distorting the face of art. Jatin Das, who was once a zealous exhibitor of his artwork, is now considering calling it quits when it comes to displaying his creations.
Career
In the year 1962, Jatin Das exhibited his work in the newly opened gallery of his art school. This was the first of many similar exhibitions he would have during his career. He began participating in various art exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, after acquiring confidence from his first display. The Biennales in Paris in 1971, the Documenta in Kessel in 1975, and the art shows in Venice in 1978 are just a few of the notable exhibitions in which he presented his work.
Jatin Das has had more than 68 solo exhibitions during the course of his illustrious career, which spans more than 50 years. Jatin Das organised thirty-seven solo shows, both national and international, between 1965 and 1991. In India, Germany, and the United Kingdom, fourteen limited editions of his theme-based graphics and conte drawings have been presented. Many of his pieces have sold at major auction houses such as Christie's, Sotheby's, and Osian's. He has also contributed to art through great murals and sculptures over the years.
He has also served as a consultant to a number of business and public organisations. Jatin Das was also a consultant for the Handicraft Board of the seven northeastern Indian states for the 'Festival of India' in Russia. Jatin Das has also served on the National Film Festival jury panel. He is a founding member of New Delhi's 'The Poetry Society.' He is also the Chairman of the JD Centre of Art, which he founded. JD Centre of Art is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of modern and traditional visual and plastic arts. The amazing structure, created by renowned architect BV Doshi, is located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Childhood and Early Life
Jatin Das was born in the Orissa district of Mayurbhanj in 1941. He grew up in a Bengali middle-class family. He was exposed to art in the form of music throughout his boyhood, as music was the primary means of worshipping deities at the time. Jatin was raised in an environment where music was a part of life, and as a result, he became a passionate music fan. So much so that he would spend many of his nights in Bombay attending to concerts by maestros such as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Professor S.B. Palsikar at the renowned Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay trained Jatin in the field of art from 1957 to 1962. He began his painting profession shortly after completing his education.
Career as a teacher
In the year 2008, Jatin Das worked as a professor at New Delhi's prestigious Jamia Millia Islamia University. He worked as a visiting professor at the same university from 2009 to 2011. He was included as a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts this time around. He has also served as a visiting lecturer at the National School of Drama, the School of Planning and Architecture, the College of Art, and the National Institute of Design.
