with Dr. Manish Arora, a scholar and an innovator.
Dr. Manish Arora is a Raman Post-Doctoral Fellowship awardee, one of the most scholarly designer at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi for the Department of Applied Arts at Faculty of Visual Arts and at senior member at Design Fist. Designing, by nature is student friendly, if one taps into their creative senses with patience and practice they can become innovative designers.
Dr. Manish, started his career along the introduction of computers in major office rooms in India, he soon grabbed on to the new age graphic designing also, he says it’s crucial for designers to keep learning new art forms and to expand their creative horizon by good observation of changing lifestyle methods and keep meeting new people from different cultures, community and cities, extensive traveling is a must for aspiring designer, it will provide them with great creative incites for their visual design. Designing by its very nature is student friendly if one taps into their creative senses with patience and practice they can become good designers.
His path towards designing began, while preparing for engineering, but his destiny took him towards becoming one of the most profound design researchers in India. In early 90s he took up various projects in designing, in guidance of his seniors and Gurus such as Prof P V Gajjar, Prof P. B. Laal and Shri Shyamaldas Gupta and Prof. Hiralal Prajapati, guiding him throughout his creative journey.
While Dr. Manish was working as a professional designer on field his true calling for teaching came into form of an opportunity at Banaras Hindu University and soon joined the applied art faculty at the University. Along his creative skills, he has developed strong organisational skills while working as a branch manager for an advertisement agency at Chandigarh in 2003, where he worked for famous brands like Maruti and TVS, and created brand identity advertisements in 5 to 6 states of India.
After establishing himself as a the stalwarts designer, Dr. Manish went deeper towards academics while holding on to professional research based work he took the Raman Post Doctor Fellowship in Delhi under UGC, he was one of the 2 people in India who received the fellowship in field of design and went to USA to teach at Centre for Communication program at John Hopkins University one of the top medical institutes. They studied, what are the requirement of nomadic people and how to address their medical needs, through which the government and medical faculty can communicate with them.
Spending a long time in teaching, Dr. Manish strongly believes that students should pursue a post degree education not from their parent institute and try for foreign university’s if possible, the kind of practical knowledge and exposure one receives from such endeavours is great for confidence building.
Today the government has recognised the need for good designers, and for past few years have launched, design oriented schemes such as ‘Make in India’ with the intent to increase design and innovation. Dr. Manish received the opportunity to better, the designing structure of BHU and make it as an HUB for design and applied arts.
Currently Dr. Manish Arora has collaboration with MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) and Michigan State University for working on a Govt. of India funded project under SPARC scheme for social design, his journey encourages students to make a strong career in design, even establish start-ups, for an extraordinary future for young designers, awaits in digital art.

What are the job opportunities after MFA in Applied arts?
After completing MFA the horizon for jobs is practically unlimited, though one should start working seriously right from BFA itself. The other point students should keep in mind to clear their basics, but not entangle themselves in it, basics of sketching should be maintained religiously, as it is the basic rhythm for designers. After BFA, it’s better to do MFA in another country as the exposure will be greater professionally. Millions of jobs are available in media and film industry, be it graphic designer, graphic editor, content writer, art production etc. It is even true that if only even 10 applied artist are in demand even one if not fully qualified, thus opportunities are in millions today. In advertisement, students can even aim to start their own ad agencies. The field of Design maters on students impute and self-development.
How to design calligraphy into portrait?
Field of Calligraphy is definitely great path to follow as an artist, a career in calligraphy, aesthetics and self-work is a must for aspiring calligraphers, but again one must remember to work on their illustration. Even the field of animation is to be given a try for, as it is industry which will always be in need of creative artist.
In photography, careers are on a rise, due to the online world, whatever is visible its sellable. Even though smart phones and the selfie culture has allowed common people to capture their favourite moments, but the art of good photography is something which requires great skills of perception and visuals.
How to start a business and acquire funding if have business idea only. And how to connect with companies with innovative ideas if have any?
If one wants to start with business, they should work with a team, as you need a manager, technical workers, designers etc. Business is not an individual’s work. About funding, young people after their education can directly start online funding initiatives, even out sourcing is a great option to try out.
How can we increase and improve our designs career?
Along with designing and illustration, young people should also learn other skills and subjects to improve their chances in designing.
